Video Link: Full-StoryLong story short, there's a volcano, James Bond, Sarah Connor, and a small town There's a pretty low-key movie and some of you may not know It's called Dante's Peak That's just extra conversation but in the movie, there's a story that Pierce Brosnan tells a group of volcanologists. The story he tells is about what he learned in his science class. It's about a frog. The story goes like this... If you put a frog in boiling water, it'll jump right out. Makes sense, there's danger, the water is too hot, and the frog wants to survive. This is where the alternative comes into play. If you take the same frog, put it in lukewarm water, and bring it up to a boil...what happens? The frog will wait there and boil. It's interesting because there's also a book called Eat The Frog (not sure why frogs are the stars) The correlation to business is simple. If you are in the problem, the problem tends to evolve. What does this mean? Basically, if you set out to solve a problem, the problem takes on nuances. You essentially try and solve the problems of the problems. This leads leaders and business owners to get pulled down deeper into the issue. It clouds judgment and takes away alignment from the problem at hand. People can't see the bottom because the changes they make, create new issues. Those new issues become their own issues. You start to get further and further away from the issue. This is where 2 simple re-frames can come into play...
What would it take to view the problem differently? Imagine if you had a challenge, you ask yourself and your team, what would it take to fix this? This is where your team brain dumps and really digs through what that looks like. The way this works is specificity. What's the timeline, the actions, the people, the execution? What do the new behaviors look like? The other is if I had to start over. If you stepped out of the problem right now and viewed this as a core challenge, what would that look like? Removing all the things that have anchored to your headspace, what clarity would you find? This allows you to re-examine the process you need to fix the challenge at hand. Either of these frames works incredibly well for casing challenges in business. It also helps incorporate teams into the solution. This drives engagement and builds stronger rapport with leaders and teams.
